Your Role at SafelyYou

As a Data Integration Engineer at SafelyYou, you will be the subject matter expert behind how our internal systems communicate with the outside world. You will design, build, and operate robust integration pipelines that transform data between our internal event-based architecture and the diverse formats required by our third-party API partners. You will play a critical role in scaling our external data exchange capabilities, handling complex payload mappings, and ensuring that our systems gracefully manage failure modes at scale.

You will work closely with R&D architects, other data engineers, backend developers, and cross-functional teams to define and implement integration patterns for webhooks, external REST APIs, and partner platforms. Additionally, you will own technical communications for integrations, managing Go-Live data backfills and writing clear API specifications for customer-facing documents.

This is a fully remote role. You are expected to work with minimal guidance, act as a subject matter expert for integration patterns, and proactively identify opportunities for architectural improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, build, and operate robust integration pipelines to ingest data from and push data to third-party APIs, webhooks, and custom endpoints.

• Transform, normalize, and map data payloads between SafelyYou’s internal schema and external partner specifications (e.g., JSON/XML schemas, third-party platforms).

• Performing validation on data received from third-parties, segregating data that fails validation, and automating processes with third-parties to resolve anomalies.

• Manage and execute complex data backfills and Go-Live integration pipelines for new customer rollouts.

• Write and maintain clear, high-quality technical documentation and API specifications for both internal engineering teams and external partners.

• Triage, troubleshoot, and gracefully handle integration failure modes, rate limits, and edge cases at scale, building resilient retry mechanisms.

• Scale our ability to support 3rd party integrations by building systems and tooling to allow non-engineer users to configure, monitor, and perform backfills for third-party integrations.

• Ensure data quality, consistency, and reliability by developing automated tests and validating payload outputs with ongoing pipeline monitoring.

• Work in an Agile environment to plan, track, and improve the delivery of new integration features and products.

• Collaborate with customer support, operations, and product teams to provide technical support and participate in on-call rotation as needed.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional experience in software, backend, or data engineering, preferably in a startup environment.

• Deep hands-on experience building, consuming, and operating integrations with REST APIs, webhooks, and third-party platforms.

• Strong programming proficiency in Python and SQL for building reliable data transformation and integration pipelines.

• Proven track record of handling complex data transformations, schema mapping, and payload normalization across disparate systems.

• Experience encountering and solving API failure modes and operational challenges at scale (e.g., implementing exponential backoff, dead-letter queues, idempotency). Has seen where things fail and can recommend solutions to maintain a stable platform.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with specific experience writing technical documentation, ADRs, or API specs.

• Proactive about anticipating and addressing data ingestion issues before they impact the business.

• Prioritize quality over speed. When it is done, it is really done.

The Ideal Candidate:

• Proficiency with modern data stack tools, such as dbt and PySpark.

• Familiarity with workflow orchestration concepts and tools, such as Airflow.

• Exposure to Terraform and Cloud Infrastructure, such as AWS (Athena, RDS, EKS).

• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) and associated data privacy regulations (e.g., HIPAA) is a strong plus.

• Experience with HL7 data feeds and the FHIR API specification is a huge plus.

• Experience with remote work and distributed, async-first engineering teams.
